Jubilees
Canon Michael Ryan
Ruby Jubilee
A very joyful occasion was celebrated at St Wilfrid's Church in central York on Monday June 12th, when Canon Michael Ryan reached his 40th anniversary of priesthood. There was an atmosphere of great excitement and anticipation as nearly 1000 people, dressed in their summer best, gathered for the Mass at 7.00pm, concelebrated on a crowded sanctuary with Bishop John and 40 priests of the diocese. Many well-wishers had prayed for a fine evening so the weather too was all that could be wished. Parishioners and friends from Canon Michael's years in St George's, York, as Bishop's secretary, in Our Lady and St Peter's, Bridlington, St Joseph's, Our Lady's and latterly St Wilfrid's, York were delighted to be present. Tribute was paid especially to his large and supportive family, several of whom had travelled from Ireland for the festivities. Also in the congregation were guests from the wider Christian family, including York Hospital Chaplaincy Team, as Canon Michael is greatly loved and respected for his ecumenical work. One of many positive comments from them afterwards was 'the wonderful devotion of the Catholic people at that Mass'.
Everyone was invited for refreshments afterwards in the marquee on the lawn, festooned with Ruby decorations, and in the Rectory, where nostalgic photographs of Canon Michael's progress on his pilgrim journey since childhood were admired. Large quantities of delicious food provided by volunteers, and fine wines rich and juicy were served by a cheerful team of willing helpers, and the Irish Ceilidh band Celtic Blend entertained the revellers with appropriate music. A beautiful cake, decorated with sculptures of the Sacraments, was cut; and a Jubilee cheque for £4850 was presented, with another from Our Lady's parish for several hundred pounds. The craic continued in fine spirits until 2.00 am.
It was a marvellous evening for everyone concerned, and the Parish is still rejoicing in countless happy memories. We all congratulate Canon Michael on this milestone Jubilee and wish him many more happy fruitful years in the priesthood.
