Taizé Advent Vigil

'O come all ye faithful joyful and triumphant' - how many times do we hear this favourite Christmas hymn and yet, during the weeks of Advent, the weeks leading up to Christmas, those 'joyful and triumphant' moments are few and far between. In this Advent vigil, we gather together to take 'time-out' of the pre-Christmas hustle and bustle and 'be still' as we light our candles in prayer, listen to the word of God and sing some of the beautiful Taizé chants.

The Advent Vigil will take place at Holy Name of Mary Church, Linthorpe in Middlesbrough on Wednesday 13th December 2006 at 7.00 pm. It will be led by Bernadette Murray, and the music will be led by Val Goldsack. Please come along and join us prayer and 'be still' this Advent. We're Socialising at Holy Name

A group of parishioners, together with Fr Paul Farrer, developed a range of social activities to help bring the parish together as community. Sr Pauline facilitated a day to help the parish move forward following difficult changes. This resulted in a number of groups focusing their energies on different aspects of parish life.

One of these groups, the Social Committee, put together a programme of events that would appeal to a wide range of parishioners, with the aim of getting to know more about each other. In July, a day excursion to Ripon and Skipton proved a great success. Recently a Ceilidh in the church hall was a sell-out and Ron Marshall and his band entertained us for an evening. A great time was had by all.

Feeling even more adventurous, a golf tournament was organised for 4th October. After initial planning, in a mad moment, we decided not just to invite members of the two parishes, as in previous events, but the local parishes in the diocese. Peter Wordsworth of the Social Committee said, 'We took a huge gamble with the weather and were lucky enough to book Middlesbrough Municipal Golf Club. What a response we got for the day! Twelve Teams of four were entered from within the local Deaneries and the weather played its part, giving us a gloriously sunny afternoon'. The winning Team was captained by Canon Dan Spaight from Thornaby. An excellent buffet followed and a merry pint or two in the bar made an enjoyable end to a successful northern diocesan event.

Fr Farrer, Parish Priest, said 'We look forward to more events following a really great start, and there are further opportunities for our parishioners to get together in the pipeline! Future events include a night at Sunderland Dogs in November and we're certain we'll continue to build on our success'.
